Quarterly GDP, labor market, and producer price indicators for the Brazilian agribusiness sector.

Status: Ongoing · Period: 2019–present · Team: Center for Advanced Studies on Applied Economics (Cepea), University of São Paulo

About the project

Cepea, at the University of São Paulo, publishes regular indicators that track the performance of Brazilian agribusiness. Agribusiness is measured as the sum of four segments: agricultural inputs, primary production, agroindustry, and agribusiness services.

Objective

Provide timely, consistent measures of the size and performance of Brazilian agribusiness for researchers, policymakers, and the private sector.

My role

  • Calculate and monitor the agribusiness GDP and labor market indicators, and write the quarterly analytical reports.
  • Contribute to the calculation of the agricultural Producer Price Index (IPPA).

Methods

  • GDP: measured for each of the four agribusiness segments, with real income (GDP-income) as the main indicator, which combines changes in volume and in relative prices.
  • Labor market: based on microdata from the IBGE Continuous National Household Sample Survey (PNAD-C), using Cepea’s method to identify agribusiness activities.
